Legalizing a golf cart? 89vert?
« on: October 14, 2009, 04:22:41 PM »
So I'm hitting an auction this weekend that's gonna have a shit load of golf carts up for auction. Anyone know what the chances are of actually making one street legal? It's not something I'd be driving on a regular basis or anything, but I've always wanted to get a golf cart and drop a bike motor in it, take it to some shows, whatever. Just wanted to know if it would be possible to get it through an inspection so that I could rip around on the streets if need be. 89vert I'm looking your way cause I know you're an inspector...

Hahah thats crazy. I'd like an atv for road use.
All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Haha, well yeah obviously it would need to be modified. But hey, you can make them street legal in the states... it was worth a shot.

I've heard they're only legal in four states. California, Colorado, Texas and Arizona. I was trying to figure out how to mod an atv for road use last year. Theres hella info online about people getting harassed by the po even when they are properly registered.

ICBC says you can only make a golf cart legal to cross a street, not drive on the street.

ya know, ill bet you could actually make it street legal. i mean there are tons of vehicles that dont have a crash test rating, or any of those other things. you would have to do ALOT of modifications, but i would look into registering it as a bike, or in a smilar class. i mean if anyone here has heard of the T-rex...its like a two seater 3 wheel bike. but it has like a steering wheel, side by side seats...anyways they can be registered here...why not a golf cart..

now as far as the fabrications go, you obviously would need to reinforce everything, i mean this is just a rough estimate...but to actually do this you would probably be spending somewere around 20,000 dollars....and thats just not worth it...so instead of thinking about whether or not it can be registered, you should be thinking about what fabrication needs to be done to make it legal to be registered.....

You cannot make it road legal, no matter what. End of debate.

probably could easily insure it for offroad use, but no chance on actual road use

T-rex's are designed for the road, and clearly have been made with that intention, golf carts, as the name implies, are meant for golf...  :bash:

well, i can awnser this one for you since we've done it.   you can licence and insure them with a restricted plate.  you have to add headlights and tail lights.  the catch is you can't just drive it anywhere, you can drive it from your house to the golf course(within a certain KM limit).  first you have to be a member at a golf course, then you have to go to the RCMP and get a written consent letter to ICBC authorizing a restricted plate.   then you go to ICBC and register, insure and plate your cart.   you can also get the plates for atv's enduro style motorcycles, etc.  we did this for my dads golf cart, he lives 2km's from the osoyoos golf course and it is way cheaper to insure it and store it at home, than it is to pay a monthly storage fee at the course for your own cart.   I also did this , this year for my atv.  I bought a snow plow for it and was gonna use it for snow removal on public streets.  got the letter and plated it.

here's some info  http://www.icbc.com/registration-licensing/specialty-vehicles/off-road

cheers: colby

you'd be surprised,
you can make a dirt bike street legal,

I have no idea if you can do it with a golf cart, but technically right hand drives and super motos are illegal too
